Stella, 47, has shared her story and is seeking the opinions of our readers.
She firmly believes that she is doing the right thing, but her husband’s opinion and actions have created turmoil in their family.
Stella begins her letter by explaining, “I have two daughters, aged 20 and 21, who still live at home with us.
They both work part-time and are putting themselves through college.
Both of my daughters are full-time students.
My stance on their living situation has always been the same and remains unwavering.”
“I have always told them that as long as they are in school, they can live at home without the burden of paying rent. My daughters are not living with us for nothing; they contribute and share the responsibilities and daily duties.
They help out tremendously with their younger half-siblings by picking them up from daycare/school, taking them to appointments when I’m working, and babysitting them. I am completely satisfied with how our family functions. However, my husband adds a complicating factor to our lives.
The woman’s husband opposes this arrangement and voices his concerns.
Stella continues, “My husband has always had a cordial relationship with both of my daughters. Although their relationship has never been exceptionally close, he has treated them as his own children. However, he strongly believes that they should be more independent.”
“He seems to think that they should be paying rent and contributing more. He even claims that they are taking advantage of me. I disagree.”
The clash of opinions has caused numerous misunderstandings within our family, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere as soon as I step through the front door. The tension continues to escalate, and I fear that I may not be able to handle it for much longer.”
Stella’s husband’s behavior has become increasingly harsh.
Stella shares, “My husband has gone as far as lecturing my daughters, once even comparing them to parasites living on a tree, draining its vital energy without giving anything in return. This was deeply offensive to both of them. While they have not provoked a confrontation, I sense their growing resistance towards him.”
“Not long ago, he decided that he would no longer contribute to the household expenses, citing one reason. He believes that since they spend their money as they wish, he should do the same. Currently, he takes care of the exterior maintenance of our house, and we are in the process of updating the interior, with him doing all the work himself. For now, I have chosen to let this issue go.”
Stella finds herself at a crossroads, unsure of how to proceed.
Stella expresses her uncertainty, saying, “I have always believed that our relationship was mature and reasonable. We respected each other and never allowed any conflicts to arise within our family. But now, the situation has changed so drastically, and I am frustrated by the lack of choice or compromise for any family member. His ultimatums within the family are completely inappropriate.”
