Mark Carney’s brutal message to Trump just minutes after being elected

Mark Carney Elected as Canada’s New Prime Minister, Takes Immediate Action Against Trump
Mark Carney, the former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has officially won the race to become Canada’s next Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau at a pivotal moment for the country.

His leadership begins amid a heated trade dispute with Canada’s long-standing ally, the United States.

And the new leader hasn’t wasted any time firing back at Donald Trump.

A Sudden Policy Reversal
The trade war between the U.S. and Canada escalated when President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports as part of his “America First” strategy. However, on Tuesday afternoon, Trump abruptly reversed his decision to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%—just hours after making the announcement.

The abrupt U-turn, which sent shockwaves through financial markets, came after a Canadian official withdrew plans for a 25% surcharge on electricity.

Despite the reversal, tensions remain high, and the trade war shows no signs of ending. The coming days are uncertain, and for Americans, the dispute could mean rising costs for everyday essentials like groceries and gasoline.

On Truth Social, Trump previously addressed the situation, writing, “WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID.”

He also suggested a radical solution—Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state—as a way to avoid tariffs. Trump criticized the country, claiming it had failed to prevent harmful drug flows into America.

“What I’d like to see: Canada becoming our 51st state. We provide them with military protection, and we don’t need them to build our cars,” Trump remarked on Feb. 3 from the Oval Office. “If people were willing to play the game properly, it would be a certainty. But many don’t want to play.”

“America Is Not Canada”
Both Canada and Mexico vowed to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. goods.

It’s no secret that Trump and Justin Trudeau often clashed, and it appears that Trudeau’s successor is just as unwilling to back down.

During his victory speech on March 9, Mark Carney, the newly elected Liberal Party leader and Canada’s new Prime Minister, made it clear that he intends to stand firm in the trade battle with Trump.

He wasted no time calling out the former U.S. president.

“There’s one person trying to weaken our economy—Donald Trump,” Carney stated. “He has imposed unjustified tariffs on our industries, on what we build, sell, and how we earn a living.”

His speech grew even more forceful:

“America is not Canada. And Canada will never—under any circumstances—become part of America. The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they get their way, they will destroy our way of life. He is attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We cannot, and will not, let him win.”

Carney continued with a sharp-edged warning:

“Canadians know how to respond when someone else drops the gloves. So let me be clear—whether in trade or in hockey, Canada will win.”

He didn’t shy away from acknowledging the seriousness of the situation:

“I know these are dark days. Dark days caused by a country we can no longer trust.”

But he also called for unity and resilience:

“We’re moving past the initial shock, but let’s not forget the lessons learned. We must look out for ourselves and for each other. The road ahead won’t be easy, but we stand together.”

Carney’s election was decisive—he won in the first round with 85.9% of the Liberal Party vote, defeating his closest challenger, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

At 59, Carney is no stranger to high-stakes leadership, having previously served as governor of two G7 central banks.

The stage is now set for what could be one of the most intense Canada-U.S. trade battles in recent history.
