Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, continues to make headlines even after her husband, Barack Obama, completed his two terms in office.
Lately, the couple has been at the center of rumors about a possible divorce, with some even claiming that Barack has already moved on.
Michelle Obama’s Response to the Rumors
Michelle Obama and Barack Obama are no strangers to speculation. Having served two terms in the highest office in the land, they have learned how to handle rumors surrounding their relationship.
During a recent appearance at SXSW, Michelle shared how she and her husband rise above the gossip and stay grounded. She reflected on their ability to stay hopeful, not just during their time in the White House but beyond.
“People always ask me and Barack, how did we stay hopeful in, not just the eight years that we were in the White House, but beyond?” Michelle said while recording the podcast IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. “Because, let me tell you, there was a lot of negative energy flipping our way — a lot of rumors, a lot of gossip, a lot of, you know, my husband wasn’t born in this country … we weren’t patriotic, he didn’t get into Harvard.”
She went on to explain, “But through it all, what kept us sane — and we tried to instill this in our daughters — is, you cannot live through social media.”
Michelle emphasized her belief that staying away from social media’s negativity is key. She shared, “I’m fairly sure I’ve never once looked at a comment section. Don’t let that negative energy enter into your space. These are people who don’t know you. A lot of this stuff is made up, and it does not feed you.”
She continued, “That doesn’t mean you don’t stay informed, but staying informed has nothing to do with the comment section. It has everything to do with the content of the stories that you take in.”
Michelle noted how people today often feel “so trapped by social media,” and urged everyone to broaden their sources of information. “We’ve got to broaden our spectrum, and we have to get off the phone,” she said.
Addressing the Divorce Rumors
Michelle and Barack have recently faced unfounded divorce rumors, which intensified when the former President attended social events alone. He was photographed earlier this year at Jimmy Carter’s funeral and at Trump’s 2025 inauguration without Michelle by his side.
However, a source explained that Michelle’s absence is simply because she has “checked out” of the Washington D.C. lifestyle.
Barack also addressed the speculation in a public way when he posted a heartfelt birthday message for Michelle, sharing a picture of the two of them from Valentine’s Day. In the caption, he referred to her as the “love of [his] life.”
The couple, married for over thirty years, shares daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.
